We would have posted the entirety of this list, promulgated by the EU's music international trade group (the "IFPA"), but have instead decided to provide only a partial count. Without coloring the list with our world view on copyright, we merely mention that this list really wasn't very consistent with our philosophy here at I_Lick_Lists: to lick only the most original lists...and then
copy them.**
Again, without wedging our opinion, quite simply, the IFPA's Top Ten is a rehashed version of the same argument the music industry's been making for years, with new force due to the proliferation of weapons of massive copyright destruction in China. But, hey, we've posted half their list, plus the foregoing link, for you to decide for yourself without undue influence. Here's the partial count:
"1. Pirate Bay, one of the flagships of the anti-copyright movement, makes thousands of euros from advertising on its site, while maintaining its anti-establishment "free music" rhetoric.
2. AllOfMP3.com, the well-known Russian web site, has not been licensed by a single IFPI member, has been disowned by right holder groups worldwide and is facing criminal proceedings in Russia.
3. Organized criminal gangs and even terrorist groups use the sale of counterfeit CDs to raise revenue and launder money.
4. Illegal file-sharers don’t care whether the copyright-infringing work they distribute is from a major or independent label.
5. Reduced revenues for record companies mean less money available to take a risk on "underground" artists and more inclination to invest in "bankers" like American Idol stars."
Read the rest here if you'd like to see one of the most pretentiously legalistic words--"Pontificating"--used in print.
(** LEGAL NOTICE: I_Lick_Lists does not engage in copyright infringement, or any other form of infringement of intellectual property rights, and respects the originality and artistic integrity and intellectual property of its contributors. In other words, it was a joke, dude. All lists reproduced, in whole or in part, receive proper attribution and/or reference link. Furthermore, all research receives proper attribution and/or reference link. You can be sure that all original lists are, indeed, original. Once, in 5th grade, I was "apprehended" as I took a "shortcut" in my SRA reading comprehension cards, and have never forgot my only moment on the hall of copycat shame. And this is as debased, befuddled and whipped by these guys as I'll permit our little group to get. Until later tonight. Meow.)
